Caputo's Corner has admittedly been less than prolific lately, but we here at the blog still want to wish you a happy Fat Tuesday. Today of course is the last day before Lent, and all over the country (especially in New Orleans where my assistant principal is from) people are eating King Cakes and throwing beads until they can eat King Cake and throw beads no more (THROW ME SOME BEEEEEEEADS!!!). I actually ate some King Cake this morning...and no I did NOT get the baby inside. Don't forget also that tonight it is totally legit to have breakfast for dinner: pancakes, bacon, sausage, and eggs. Use up as much fat and oil as you can possibly hold because tomorrow it all changes......
I know that all of my readers observe Lent in different ways. My biggest thing is to make sure that I follow the dietary restrictions. Tomorrow and on Good Friday are fasting days. That means you are only allowed one full meal, with two small meals, and nothing in between. The one full and two small meals don't bother me, but it's the nothing in between part where I sometimes struggle. On all Fridays of Lent, and tomorrow, you can't eat meat. That doesn't mean you can be creative with your meals...my tuna fish is all ready to go. OK, so that's not that creative, but still. It is also customary to "give something up." My "giving something up" is to start a "swear fund." I got this idea from Jess last year, and I liked it. I don't have a really heavy potty mouth ($#~!@!!!), but I have been known to let a few four-letter words fly in my day (and NEVER on here...AK, I'm looking at you). So my Lenten observance is as follows:
50 cents for all strong dirty words (and I'll leave it to your imagination what those words are)
25 cents for minor dirty words.
Last year, I ended up racking up a whopping $23.50 in foul languages fines on myself. At the end of Lent I donated that to Jena's team at Relay for Life (a very worthy charity for those of you looking for one). This year, I hope to not rack up quite as big a penalty, but I do know that the money I do lose...er...make will end up going to a good cause.
What are your Lenten plans for the next 40 days?
