Slow time here at the blog. I've been somewhat preoccupied with parent teacher conferences every day this week (and will be for a couple more days next week). Don't expect a whole lot of activity here in the same way that August and September were pretty active. Next week I will be away for a couple days (Wednesday and Thursday) attending outdoor education with the 5th grade at North Bay Outdoor Education Center in Cecil County. So while conferencing has taken up most of my time now, we are going to be dark for at least 2 days next week too. Very busy times here for Caputo's Corner.
BUT
I will make sure that our running items during football season will continue! Including...
Nick's Picks (tomorrow-with AK's contribution on Saturday)
Redskins Game Analyses (Sunday or Monday)
Menace Mashup (Tuesday)
A few quick hits on the sports world tonight:
-It's Tebow time! You can say what you want about how Tebow's polarizing history could have played a role in John Fox's decision to start him this weekend against the Dolphins. The reason Tebow is starting right now is pretty simple. Kyle Orton stinks. He and Rex Grossman are two peas out of the same pod. Now, will Tebow mean instant success for the Broncos? I would guess not, but he provides a similar dimension for the Broncos that John Beck ought to provide for the Redskins: mobility. Tebow perhaps will be a little more bold when it comes to keeping the ball as opposed to Beck, but the ability to run with the ball is something that Orton can't do and Grossman refused to do. It will be interesting to see if either one of these quarterbacks can spark their respective teams.
-The Capitals are off to a 5-0 start (and soon to be 6-0 pending tonight's result in Philadelphia), the best in franchise history. The Caps look to be picking right up where they left off in the regular season last year. The operative word there is regular season. This team has proven that they can be successful in the regular season. However, as long as Ovechkin and Boudreau are on the bench, this team will be judged by their success and failure in the post season. 4 straight years of early round exits have made the charges in DC Hockeytown antzy. Early on it was OK because for years the team just had trouble getting to the playoffs. Now that they are perennial entrants, they have to make a deep run. Boudreau will be fired this season if they do not get to at least the conference finals. Book it.
-The NBA is still in it's soon-to-be season long lockout. Neither side seems to want to compromise, and most of the premier talent is already setting up overseas. The season is lost...and nobody really seems to care. That's all I have to say about that.
That's all I got tonight. In other news, it looks like Herman Cain is making headway in the Republican primary race to challenge Obama in 2012. His "9,9,9" tax plan has come under a lot of scrutiny lately as he has surged in the polls. Does this mean that the Tea Party is really starting to take over the Republican Party, or is this surge nothing more than a fluctuation in the polls as the Republicans can't make their mind up about who to rally behind next Fall? I feel like I'll have a little bit more to say on this topic later on when we get active again, but I'll leave it at that for now. NFL picks are coming tomorrow!
Great post as always. Good ork on the Skins and NBA stuff. One quick thing, if you are only going to judge the Caps success by how they do in the playoffs, then don't write about them until the playoffs. I suggest a moratorium on the Caps until the playoffs arrive, similar to what Josh did with the NFL lockout... Dustin
ReplyDeleteInteresting idea on the moratorium. I don't write a whole lot about the Caps anyway. I don't really think I have enough to say to fill an 82 games season. So I don't think I would devote a whole lot of attention to them right now, especially during football season, but I don't know if I can promise going so far as to say I'll put a moratorium on it. Let's face it, if Ovechkin gets his Ovech-trick (9 goals...you know the ad), I MIGHT say something about it, haha.
ReplyDeleteI'd caution you to not read too much into the "polarizing history" of Timmy Ra-Ra in the debate about whether he should play, start, etc. for the Broncos. Sure, there are probably people who don't want him to play/succeed because of his activism against women's rights, but there are probably as many people (or more) who want to see him succeed SOLELY for his disregard for women's rights. Take the two groups' opinions together and toss them in the toilet, because they base their opinions on everything but football.
ReplyDeleteThough I disagree with his views on women's equality (or lack thereof), MY qualms about him playing in the NFL are due to his football abilities. As I told Zach, I think one of two things will happen: either he'll try to play the way he did in college (which did much to mask his weaknesses as a passer) and won't be able to sustain it due to injury, or as defensive coordinators get more film on him they'll begin using defenses designed to expose those weaknesses (inaccuracy, average arm strength, and possibly not-so-great ability to read a defense). I could be wrong, but I take the word of guys like Trent Dilfer who think he hasn't developed the skills necessary for an NFL career enough to survive - he will end up falling back on his instincts which, again, were awesome and worked wonders in college, but in the NFL will get him decapitated.
In an unrelated note (and one which we will be probably discussing much in the months to come, since presidential campaigns are now years if not decades in the making), I thought Michelle Bachmann was the Tea Party candidate? And then Rick Perry? Now the Mayor of SimCity is the Tea Party candidate?
