The title of this post is an homage to Lt. James J. Six, as this was the title of his former blog back in college. What up, Jimmers?
Football:
So just when everyone thought the Redskins' free agent feeding frenzy was about to take a detour because of the "sanctions" levied against us by the powers that be on Park Avenue, think again. Tuesday saw a pair of wide receiver signings as the Redskins inked Josh Morgan and Pierre Garcon to bolster the wide receiving corps. Word on the street is that we are also after Eddie Royal, but that now seems unlikely because he wants to be a #1 guy and probably won't be given who we already have.
Wide receivers are divas after all.
It didn't end there though as we also resigned Adam Carriker, which I think was a very important signing as he is a perfect 3-4 defensive end. If we are going to keep running this scheme for years to come, Carriker is the perfect guy you want working the edge. He won't get a lot of sacks, but he is very disruptive, and that is exactly what you need to allow the linebackers to make plays. Speaking of which, our next priority should be to keep London Fletcher in the fold. I know he is as old as dirt, but you need that kind of veteran leadership, especially when we are still working out the kinks of the 3-4. We did much better in 2011 than we did in 2010, but there is still much to learn.
Back to the receivers now. After we pulled off the supertrade of the offseason so far, the next priority had to have been beefing up the receiver corps to help out (in all likelihood) RGIII. The biggest name thrown around was Vincent Jackson, but he signed a megabucks deal with Tampa Bay. Good for him, I actually like Pierre Garcon a lot better in our fold. I'm kind of surprised he didn't wait for Peyton to sign and then piggy back with him, but we'll take it (...hey, would YOU turn down $42.5 million? Didn't think so.). Garcon had the best season of his career last year with guys like Curtis Painter and Kerry Collins throwing at him. I think he will fit in well. I also think we overpaid, but I wonder how much he would have gotten had we not been tarred and feathered by the league. Morgan will be a nice #2 guy to keep secondaries honest, and this will allow speedsters like Santana Moss (assuming he can still speed) to do what they do best: run the fly pattern. It will take some time for them to gel, which is why it is absolutely imperative that these guys get to mini-camp and get to training camp ON TIME! Next job: offensive line...oye vey.
Politics:
Newt Gingrich is just stubborn. JUST QUIT ALREADY! He has been a little bit nicer to Santorum lately, so that's good, but still he is not getting out of the presidential race despite now near mathematical impossibility that he will secure enough delegates to get the nomination. It really is just a two-horse race at this point between Rick and Mitt. From what Newt has been saying lately, it seems like he is staying in solely to keep Romney from getting the nomination, which makes this a personal matter for Newt more than a political matter. You know what I say to that? Release your delegates to Santorum and get out on the stump for him TOMORROW! He has acknowledged that staying in the race is splitting the conservative vote and allowing the moderate Romney to race right up the middle. So while he may be keeping Romney's overall vote total down, he is allowing Romney to pick up more delegates as we are still in states that allocate them proportionally. So even if Romney comes in 3rd like he did on Tuesday in Mississippi and Alabama, he can still pick up a nearly third of the delegates each time. Couple that on top of an outright win in Hawaii on Tuesday (Aloha...) and Romney actually increased his lead in the delegate count.
What makes me sick though is that for the last month and a half Romney has not made one substantial policy statement. His entire campaign has centered around delegate math and doing everything he humanly can to discredit his fellow Republicans. I wonder if he and his SuperPAC intend on campaigning with this same level of vitriol against Obama when (and if) it gets to the general. If you really are the "presumptive nominee" (which at this point he most definitely is not), stick to the issues. Why do you feel the need to keep dragging Santorum and Gingrich through the mud if you are going to win anyway? Why are you not directing your negative advertising to Obama?
Maybe it's because he's not that much unlike Obama in the first place. Ever heard of Romneycare?
Beer:
I conclude this morning's post with some brief commentary on beer. Why? Because I like beer! In my 7th grade class we are doing an experiment on brewing beer. No, we are not doing some cheap home brew kit and I am not encouraging alcoholism (quite the opposite). Right now we are learning about fungi and we watched a demonstration of yeast fermenting sugar. Last night, the top 10 list at trivia was all about the top selling beers in America. Yuengling was not on that list, but it should be! Don't worry, one of these days Yueng will actually get across the Mississippi River...and maybe even one day to the West Coast. And then, all will be right with the Traditional American Lager world.
