Lots of stuff has happened in the days since Caputo's Corner last came up for air. Let's take a look at some of the things we have been following closely here at the blog.
-Super Tuesday came and went, and we still don't know much more about what's going on with those Republicans. Mitt Romney won 6 of the 10 states up for grabs last Tuesday, but still cannot call himself a "presumptive nominee." The biggest thing going on right now is the calls for each other to pull out of the race, and the refusals thereof. Rick Santorum took 3 states on Tuesday (Oklahoma, Tennessee, and North Dakota) and Newt Gingrich only won one, but it was his home state of Georgia, and it also happened to have the biggest individual delegate prize of all 10. With the primary season shifting to more southern states next week (Mississippi and Alabama), this is Gingrich's chance to shine. At least now both Gingrich and Santorum realize that they are splitting the conservative vote, but instead of being a patriot and bowing to the other (or at least working out some kind of deal), they get on their soap box and call for the other one to get out. Meanwhile, Romney can laugh all the way to the convention. Think about it, Romney only got 38% of the vote in Ohio. If Gingrich or Santorum were out of the race, the other would have easily blown Romney away in that crucial state. Despite the establishment's pushing, the conservative electorate is not happy with Mitt Romney, especially with this aura of inevitability he has around him. Gingrich and Santorum have got to figure something out. They hold the key to victory for conservatives not only in the Summer, but in November as well.
-Peyton Manning was released by the Indianapolis Colts yesterday following a tearful goodbye news conference. As mentioned here, the Colts have lots of issues going into the 2012 season, the biggest of which was what to do with Peyton and his sore neck. Well, Jim Irsay put that issue to bed by not picking up Peyton's $28 million option and making him an unrestricted free agent. Now, the question is which quarterback-starved team will be willing to pony up for him the most. The biggest concern of course will be whether or not he can take a hit. He may be healthy now, but neck injuries (especially having had as many surgeries as he has) don't just heal and get back to normal. What made Peyton so successful in Indy was his offensive line keeping him upright. If he goes to a team like Washington (a very real possibility), it might be just one and done, especially with his blind side not secured. Trent Williams is one failed drug test away from a year-long suspension. The Redskins are better off getting a young QB who can potentially mask the deficiencies of the O-line for a while. RGIII would be ideal, but assuming the Browns pony up more (which I think will happen), the Skins might have to draft somebody like Ryan Tannehill to groom for the future. Let the kid take his lumps this year.
-Finally this morning, have you heard about this gigantic solar explosion that should be decimating Earth this very minute? You read the news headlines on this thing and you would think that doomsday is upon us. Here are the facts. Solar flares and coronal mass ejections are fairly frequent occurances. Why? The Sun is a gigantic fusion factory. Nuclear explosions happen all the time...yes, folks, the Sun is like a ga-gillion nukes exploding every second. That is how the Sun provides energy for this little planet of ours. Blame Einstein. Occasionally, pockets of energy and charged matter get shot toward Earth directly. These are flares and CMEs. Yes, they are very powerful, and yes, they could potentially destroy anything in its path. However, we here on Earth have something working in our favor: an atmosphere! Yes folks, atmosphere is made up of gas, and gas is matter. This means that the charged particles will get blocked by the atmosphere before it reaches us. That being said, the matter reaching the atmosphere probably will cause disruptions in wireless communications, but when do those things work anyway? As far as you're concerned, your day will be completely unaffected. Now, for those of you interested in cool space stuff, you might very well get to see the Northern Lights. Earth is a magnet, so the charged matter tends to move toward the poles of the magnet, interacting with the atmosphere the most at the poles. These interactions lead to the Northern Lights phenomenon. Now, I don't know if we will see it in Maryland. We might still be too far south. However, in the Northern US and Canada, they might see something pretty cool later today and tonight.
Enjoy your Thursday.
