Great turnout at the League Meeting this week! While the action on the fantasy field left much to be desired, there was plenty of good-natured banter at the table at Grotto's this past week. Making surprise appearances were Patrick and Dewey, the two division leaders crawling out of their respective rabbit holes to reassert their dominance (for now) over their respective divisions.
The commissioner was late, but came loaded for bear, whistle in mouth, to officiate the action, and several fines will be handed out. Kent was nearly ejected on 4 different occasions for being Kent, even before the commissioner arrived. Dewey and JP will receive a letter in the mail with fines for violation of the uniform policy for willful display of illegal Buccaneers' equipment. Nate will be fined for violation of the league substance abuse policy on performance enhancing drugs. The evidence was whatever that thing was on his face. I swear I saw a birds nest in there. Sean, Tom, Chris, and Eddie all received $25,000 fines and 2 game suspensions (pending appeal) for unexcused absences from official league events.
In other news, the commissioner received an official reprimand from the Grotto Association of FFL Commissioners (tm) for excessive cussing for showering Carson Palmer with praise. This penalty is being challenged because the action which precipitated the reprimand was not...actually...cussing.........
How did the current leader do? Sorry, JP, you don't get your item resurrected this week. Patrick was one of only a few teams who actually did something substantial this weekend as there were low scores across the board. The league rejoices as he took out Kent 125-101 in a rematch of the 2010 title game, sufficiently recovering from his stumble last week against the commissioner. A-Aron led the way with 35 big ones while Kent could only counter with the greatest quarterback in the history of the 2016 Baltimore Ravens, Joe Flacco. A surprising 21 from Rashad Jennings provided the extra boost he needed as the rest of the squads basically cancelled each other out. Patrick once again reclaims sole possession of first place in the AFC at 8-3 while Kent all of a sudden is probably playing for a wild card at 6-5 on the outside looking in, but keep thinking he's really good at this.
Game of the Week In a battle for first place in the NFC, Dewey and Eddie duked it out in a battle where both teams played deserving of the first place mantle (the only such game of the entire weekend unfortunately). Going into Monday night in Mexico, Eddie held a 125-105 lead with Dewey holding the double hammer of Latavius Murray and Amari Cooper. Eddie proceeded to begin his weekly lamentations to the commissioner, "I think he got me," he said in typical humble Eddie fashion. The commissioner was able to convince Eddie to not concede prematurely as Dewey's hammer were both Oakland Raiders and, well, you can never trust Oakland Raiders to do anything right, even this year. While things looked bad at the start, a big 4th quarter after the commissioner went to bed from Cooper provided the lift that Dewey needed boosting him to a 130-125 win putting him back in sole possession of first place, and now with a season sweep over Eddie effectively giving him a 2 game lead. The next and possible final hurdle for Dewey to climb toward a possible division title is a Week 12 rematch with the commissioner. Eddie at 7-4 remains in the wild card chase so his season is far from over, so you can put the white flag down now, Eddie.
Blowout of the Week In another universe, this might have very well been a futility bowl. Tom didn't show up to the League Meeting, and his team didn't show up against Zach...literally. Jeremy Maclin took an O before the game started, and Tom took the L. Not that it would've mattered though as the rest of his starters played like a bunch of benchwarmers. Crabtree was the forgetten receiver in Mexico (although he did have a couple drops on some long balls toward the end zone), but by the time he took the field, this puppy was long over, Zach winning 93-64. Despite the low winning score, Zach did have 7 players top double digits, and that proved to be the difference. At 7-4, Zach is firmly in the wild card chase, and only a game behind Patrick. A final week showdown with Kinda Runny could determine the division winner as Zach currently already has a week 3 win over Patrick in his back pocket.
The Futility Bowl If this game hadn't have happened, the Blowout of the Week might very well have doubled as the Futility Bowl. Jeff's season is over, as he can only win out to get to .500 and .500 isn't looking like it was do anything this year. Nevertheless, Jeff did go into Monday night with a 5 point lead over Chris (hard as that was to believe). However, Lamar Miller brought a modicum of respectability to this matchup with 20 points, player high for the game, and at least getting Chris into the 90s, winning 91-76. Chris has made more Futility Bowl trips this year than in his first two seasons in MIISFFL combined, and it shows with is point total the worst in the AFC and that will not bode well down the stretch when it comes to tiebreakers. However, he is still right in the thick of it at 7-4. He has a game with Zach next week where a win would give him the season sweep and put him in much better position. Having already split with Patrick, he probably will not have a shot at a third striaght division title.
This week's other results:
Nick (7-4) defeated JP (1-10) 94-89
Nate (5-6) defeated Sean (3-8) 128-112
Weekly Pot Winner: Dewey (130 points)
JP held out hope that this would be the week he would get that elusive second win, but alas, the first pick in the draft is becoming closer and closer in his future. As for the commissioner, it was merely survive and advance as his point lead in the NFC has evaporated, but still with games to go against both Dewey and Eddie, controls his own destiny. Nate and Sean's game might very well have been a good one had it not been for the fact that both of them are under .500 and probably not going to make the playoffs.
MIISFFL Playoff Picture-If the season ended today:
Division winners: Patrick (8-3, AFC) and Dewey (8-3, NFC)
Wild Cards: Eddie (7-4) and Chris (7-4)
With 4 teams at 7-4, tiebreakers galore! Eddie takes the first one with a current undefeated record against the teams he's up against. Chris takes the second as we reset the tiebreaking for the next playoff spot, and he has wins currently over both Zach and Nick. This of course is subject to change over the next 3 weeks as all of these teams play each other (intradivision) again.
Playoff matchups:
Patrick (1) vs. Chris (4)
Dewey (2) vs. Eddie (3)
Patrick gets the 1 seed due to his Week 4 win over Dewey. Eddie gets the 3 seed due to his Week 3 win over Chris. So much left to be decided!
In the hunt: Nick (7-4), Zach (7-4), Kent (6-5)
On life support: Nate (5-6)
Thanks for your contribution to the pot: Jeff (4-7), Tom (3-8), Sean (3-8)
With the first pick in the 2017 MIISFFL draft.....: JP (1-10)
