As I said last week, Week 3 has a tendency to disrupt everything you know about football. Just when you thought you knew who was good and who wasn't, the New York Jets happened....
Hope that beer flavored water tastes good, Cleveland fans. Somewhere in LA LaBron is laughing at you.
Then the Buffalo Bills happened...
You Vike that? Looks like you dropped that, Kirk.....
Then Tom Back happened, but more on that later.
How did the champ do? Despite the cursed run of recent defending champions, they never did get Cleveland Brown'ed, so I guess Zach was due for a win. Sean was flying under the radar of both the league and the mashup quietly racing out to a 2-0 start, but in a week for the underdog, Zach did his part to bring the lead dogs back to the pack scoring a 120-93 win. Sean got an underwhelming performance from pretty much his entire squad with only 7 out of his 9 starters reaching their projections with his top score coming from the defense. Zach finally got consistent production from his squad, however, with 5 players scoring double digits including two 20-point efforts led by DeShaun Watson with 27. He also had the receiver to own from Monday night as Juju out-caught Antonio and doubled Antonio's yardage (although Antonio did find the end zone). Zach claws back into the AFC at 1-2 while Sean falls to 2-1 but still tied for the lead in his new division.
Game of the Week Why am I even bothering with this one? Let Tom take it from here:
"What a weekend for football. I won my survivor pool thanks to the Eagles win and the Bills trap game. $420 for a $20 entry. I completely forgot about a free fanduel tournament and placed about 3k out of 73k (free $7 win). All thats left to cap this off is a Steelers loss tonight w a strong enough performance from Godwin to take down Chris the current leader and maybe, just maybe get enough points to earn weekly high score.. Is that asking too much? After dropping 2 TDs and having another called back, Godwin finally got his TD. What a pickup, manager of the year? Who got stuck w Bell? #MFFGA"
It's interesting that a player who probably will not even see the field this year will infiltrate Tom's thoughts like a parasite. He did need that Godwin touchdown as TB tried to pull the comeback, but came up short. Tom squeaked one past Chris 127-124 knocking Chris from the ranks of the unbeaten.
Blowout of the Week: While the unbeaten teams all faltered, the 2016 champ probably wishes he had this kind of start to his 2017 campaign, taking on Kent in an NFC matchup in the only game where somebody was going to leave it still undefeated. Dewey and Kent entered Monday night virtually tied but with Dewey looking for a little Fitzmagic in his life and also starting the Bucs defense. Typically this kind of homerism goes unrewarded, and for a while there Dewey was in trouble as Pitt scored 30 points in the first half and the Fitzmagic fizzled into 3 picks. But both the D and the O righted the pirate ship in the second half. Not enough to win for them, but enough for Dewey to turn a tie game into a 136-103 rout and remain alone a 3-0.
Futility Bowl: Anybody who gets in the Futility Bowl would tell you that it's always better to win it than to lose it. Try telling that to Bruce who had to be feeling good after Captain Kirk fumbled and bumbled all over himself on Sunday only to see a garbage time TD turn out to be the difference. He had a chance on Sunday with Marvin Jones who found the end zone, but it just wasn't quite enough. Nick knocks Bruce from the ranks of the unbeaten 100-95 in a subpar effort all around, but getting that first win is always important. Besides, if Tom is allowed to boast about his survivor pool, I'm allowed to do this. My team is on the left:
That's the second week in a row I've scored top score in that league, not that I'm bragging.
This week's other results:
JP (1-2) defeated Jeff (0-3) 127-124
Nate (2-1) defeated Patrick (0-3) 126-94
Weekly Pot Winner: Dewey (135 points)
When Jeff and Patrick play each other later, I've got two pillows with lots of feathers in them that they are more than welcome to use. I'll be back next week.
