Menace Mashup: MIISFFL Championship Wrapup

Before I begin the final MIISFFL Menace Mashup column of the season, let me just take a few minutes to thank just a few of the many many people who helped make this fantasy league possible:

Caputo's Corner (Our fantastic sponsor blog)
Dottie's Trophies and Engraving of Laurel
Yahoo! Fantasy Sports
Yuengling Traditional American Lager (Because you would thank them too)
The Greene Turtle Columbia
Pub Dog Pizza and Drafthouse
CharBroil
Weis Markets
XBox 360

And of course all of the numskulls like myself who actually thought they had a chance at winning MIISFFL 2011.  Your contributions to the pot are greatly appreciated.  Enough plaudits...let's get to the final match recap of the 2011 MIISFFL season!

The championship match looked like it would be a collision course between JP and Zach all season.  Zach raced out to a commanding lead in the Greene Turtles division only to see it evaporate on the final day of the regular season.  JP took the division and the best record in all of MIISFFL.  Therefore, it was only fitting that these two would butt heads in the championship game.  It looked to be a close, high-scoring affair because of the names involved on both sides: Drew Brees for JP and Cam Newton for Zach; Rob Gronkowski for JP and Calvin Johnson for Zach.  This was a matchup full of high scoring players, and the match itself lived up to the billing.  Most of the match was contested on Christmas Eve as the NFL only played one game on Christmas Day.  On Christmas Eve, Zach raced out to another lead thanks to 20 point performances from Johnson and Newton (who ended up with 35).  However, he left the door open for JP with only single digits from McCoy, Witten, Novak, and the Jets' defense.  Going into the Christmas Day game, Zach only had a 95-88 lead over JP with JP playing the Packers defense that night.  Aaron Rodgers did his thing, racking up 43 fantasy points in a game that did not matter for the faithful commissioner.  Unfortunately for JP, Rodgers and his belt do not play defense.  The Packer defense only allowed 21 points in the victory over Chicago, but did not record a single sack, and gave up over 400 yards of offense to the Bears.  Thanks to two interceptions, the Packers were able to muster out 2 points, not nearly the production JP was looking for, as he still trailed Zach going into the Monday night game by a score of 95-90.  The Monday night game between Atlanta and New Orleans was dripping with drama as Zach played Julio Jones and Roddy White.  JP played Drew Brees, who only needed 305 yards to pass Dan Marino for the most prolific passing season in NFL history.  Brees did his job, throwing for 307 yards to break the record with 4 touchdowns.  He did get sacked once and through 2 picks for a grand total of 31 fantasy points.  However, both Jones and White ended being Matt Ryan's favorite targets on Monday night, receiving a combined 30 targets between them.  White caught 11 balls for 127 yards and Jones caught 8 for 128 yards and a touchdown.  The two big receiver performances were enough to offset the big quarterback performances from Brees, making the final score 137-121.

Therefore, I am pleased to announce that the winner of MIISFFL 2011 is..

ZACH JOHNSON!!! (also known as Ron Mexico)

Zach is an MIISFFL rookie, and one of the last players to join.  Zach ended up taking Brandon's league spot from last year after Brandon refused to respond to any offseason commisioner communication.  The rest of the league wishes that Brandon was a little more responsive.  For his trouble, Zach gets the Menace Cup with last year's winner Kent paying to have his name engraved.  Just so you know, Dottie's only charged me $15 to have Kent's name engraved, just saying.  A formal trophy presentation will be some time during the playoffs in January.

Here are the final standings of MIISFFL 2011!

1) Zach ($200 and MIISFFL Champion)
2) JP ($75 as runner up and Greene Turtles Division champion)
3) Jeff
4) Gaz ($25 as Pub Dogs Division Champion)
5) Tom
6) Kent
7) KSo
8) Nick
9) Matt
10) Pat Deegan
11) Sean
12) Patrick Small

Before our season sign off, I just want to take one more moment to thank all of you for following along with the Mashup this season on Caputo's Corner.  We know you need your fake football just as much as we do here.  During the offseason, stay tuned for more football coverage on Caputo's Corner as well as for MIISFFL 2012.  In 2012 we will be upping the stakes, so stay tuned to see what happens!  For now, enjoy the playoffs, the Super Bowl, and the abyss that is the NFL offseason.  I'll let everyone know when the trophy presentation will be so that you can be there for it.  The Draft is in April, training camp opens in July, and as TMQ says, the NFL and MIISFFL artificial universe will resume anew next Fall.

Until then, this is MIISFFL Commissioner Caputo's Corner signing off!  Thanks for reading!
