The union and the owners have now agreed to a 7 day extension to the CBA talks. What are we supposed to make of this? Are they actually making progress? If you believe Jeff Pash, the chief negotiator, not much. However, there is the other side of the coin that says if they are talking at all, it's a good thing. The bottom line is this, and we have made this point a number of times here on the blog. Nothing is going to get resolved until the two sides figure out how to divide up the $9 billion in revenues. As of right now, the two sides are still $800 million apart. I am on record as saying that at the end of the day this will come down to an 11th hour deal. That 11th hour just keeps getting delayed, but they can't do this forever. They have to come to some sort of resolution at some point, whether that be a new CBA or a lockout. If they can figure out the revenue sharing, the rest of it will take care of itself.
When (if?) the NFL locks out the union (the new deadline is 5PM next Friday), Caputo's Corner will have prepared for you a survival guide to the end of the NFL as we know it.
