Nick's Picks: NFL Week 1

What kind of a football blogger would I be if I did not make picks?  My goal this season is to come out with picks (straight up...not vs. the spread) for each NFL Sunday.  Now, this week, I obviously missed one, but for what it's worth I had Green Bay winning 38-35 (so I count myself as 1-0...what you gonna do?).  The one catch will be that, in response to accusations of rabid homerism, I will NOT pick the Redskins game every week, quite frankly, because you know who I am already going to pick, right?

In any event, let's get to week 1.

Atlanta @ Chicago-In my fantasy faux pas for the season, my starting quarterback (Matt Ryan) is going against my fantasy defense (Chicago).  That being said, I see Matt Ryan lighting up the Bears' secondary throwing at least 2 TDs to Rowdy Roddy White.  Atlanta 28 Chicago 10

Cincinnati @ Cleveland-In the Who Cares bowl, the Who Deys behind Andy Dalton might meausure up to the Who Dogs of Cleveland.  But Who Knows?  Cincinnati 17 Cleveland 14

Buffalo @ Kansas City-Expect Jamaal Charles to dominate.  Buffalo's run D is highly suspect, and while Matt Cassel isn't exactly a threat through the air, in this one, he doesn't have to be.  Kansas City 24 Buffalo 7

Philadelphia @ St. Louis-The "Dream Team" gets their first crack at a Rams team that could make noise this year, but only because they play in the NFC West.  Not this week, though...Vick won't get hurt in week 1 (just wait until week 2), which is bad news for my fantasy team...yet again.  Philadelphia 35 St. Louis 16

Detroit @ Tampa Bay-The Lions are a very chic pick to make a wild card, but remember they are the Lions, they play in the same division as the defending champs and a revamped Minnesota team.  And, oh yeah, Tampa won 10 games last year.  Tampa Bay 27 Detroit 24

Tennessee @ Jacksonville-These guys are the also-rans in a division that should be Houston's for the taking, especially now that Peyton could very well go on IR.  CJ2K is back, but will be effective enough? Jacksonville is in perpetural rebuild mode.  Tennessee 21 Jacksonville 20

Pittsburgh @ Baltimore-This one will have a lot of blood and guts, and throwbacks to the 70s, as these games have usually been over the last 5 years.  Neither D will give an inch, and offense will not find rhythm at all.  A defensive score or two might very well happen. Baltimore 13 Pittsburgh 7

Indianapolis @ Houston-Is this Houston's year?  With no Peyton to worry about for at least 2-3 months, Indy might very well be relegated to the pack at 8-8.  Kerry Collins? Please.  Arian Foster's hammy might be the only thing that keeps this from being a blowout. Houston 31 Indianapolis 14

Carolina @ Arizona-I could talk about Fitz's new contract and Cam Newton's first start, but other than that, don't expect much fireworks out of this one.  After all, we don't know what we're getting out of Kevin Kolb either.  Arizona 21 Carolina 13

Minnesota @ San Diego-Strong ground game vs. strong running game.  Unfortunately, they won't be on the field at the same time so we'll never know which is better than the other.  As far as the game goes, San Diego will have a hard time stopping AP.  Minnesota 28 San Diego 17

Seattle @ San Francisco-The other feature game in the paper bag over my head division (the NFC West)...San Fran is a trendy pick.  Seattle won the division last year...at 7-9.  Seattle 17 San Francisco 9

Dallas @ New York Jets-The Ryan Bowl revisited...Dallas doesn't really have a lot of momentum after last season's 6-10 thud, but that's when they very well be the most dangerous.  The Jets, however, live on Revis Island, and you don't visit Revis Island and win.  New  York Jets 23 Dallas 6

New England @ Miami-Is Reggie Bush the x-factor the Dolphins have been waiting for since Marino retired?  I know they don't play the same position...but Tom Brady does.  New England 41 Miami 21

Oakland @ Denver-The AFC West rivaled the NFC West in futility last season, but it's always hard to pick against Denver in the Mile High air.  Denver 24 Oakland 21

Alright...there's my first round of picks for week 1.  Let's see how I do.
