By now, most Skins fans have heard the Danimal's lawsuit against Washington City Paper and writer Dave McKenna over this...the "Cranky Redskins Fan's A-Z(orn) Guide to Dan Snyder." The paper published this article in November. I read it at the time, thought it was hilarious realizing that by and large it was a joke...sort of a medium for angry Redskins fans over the last decade to vent their frustrations over the direction Snyder has taken the team. A couple weeks ago, we find out that because of that piece, he is suing the paper for $2 million plus damages, and will continue litigation until McKenna is fired.
This is a new low for the Danimal. How can you be so thin-skinned that you want to sue a small newspaper, in a town where nobody really reads anything but the Post anyway, knowing full well that you could bankrupt this company by simply going to court? According to the Lattanzi Corrolary, the best strategy for Snyder would be to let bygones be bygones and move on with your day, but that means he will do exactly the opposite. Sure enough, fire up them lawyers. The paper has set up a legal defense fund to help its cause, and the fan support it has received has been tremendous. They intend to fight this. Good for them. Snyder is the kind of guy who cries when somebody tells him he shouldn't play with fire ("because I wanna I wanna!"), but then doesn't learn his lesson until he gets burned. I feel like this saga will have a similar ending.
One final note, this piece notes that perhaps Snyder is pulling this as nothing more than a PR stunt. Yeah, right. The only PR he's generating is bad PR for him (is there any other kind?) and readership for the Washington City Paper is now higher than at any point in its history (pehaps an exaggeration there, but you get my point.)
The Danny is his own worst enemy. I don't normally advocate calling in reinforcements to save someone from himself, but in this case, I think Danny could use intervention from cooler heads.
ReplyDeleteI remember reading the Cranky Fan's Guide right when it came out - I stumbled upon it by accident and enjoyed it, but forgot about it until the Danny decided to sue The WCP. I hear their defense fund is up around 20k now. Good for them. Bad for Danny.
