Some short takes today. Let's see what's going on.
-The Caps looked pretty bad from my perch in section 426 at Verizon Center on Saturday afternoon. After Ovechkin scored on the first shot of the game in the 2nd minute of the game, they didn't really provide much else in the way off offense for the rest of the game. The power play was punchless again. The defense and goaltending did pretty well, but when you cannot generate any offense, it's going to crack eventually. I saw very little in the way of hustle as the Kings scored a 2 on 1 goal late in the 3rd period to make the score 4-1 and essentially salt it away. They got a chance to get 2 points back against a good Phoenix team tonight. I wonder if DJ King will be in the lineup again.............. They better not look down in the standings. They are now tied with Montreal for 5th in the East, and they are only 8 points up on 9th place. If that doesn't give them a sense of urgency, I don't know what will.
-This posturing is getting ridiculous. Today we find out the NFL is taking the union to court over claims of "unfair labor practices." Their goal is to get a judge to order the union to bargain in good faith. Wait a second. I thought it was the union who was screaming that the owners wanted a lockout because they had already got their cut of the money from the TV contracts and didn't want to share it with the players. Now the owners are claming that the players want to avoid a CBA by the deadline? Something really doesn't add up. Perhaps this is just a lot of smoke and mirrors from the League to get the union to concede something, I don't kinow what. This is just getting comical. I have said before that I feel a deal will get struck, but it will not come until the 11th hour. I know that proposition looks less and less likely with each passing day, but I'm not backing down from that prediction...yet.
-Obama wants to spend $8 billion on a bullet train, a down payment for a project that will eventually cost around $58 billion. The proposed site in California is between a town on the map where nobody lives and a state penitentiary. Hmmm, me thinks that convicts will not be getting out of the big house to get on a choo choo train any time soon, no matter how fast it is. Who takes the train anymore anyway? Rail might be an enticing alternative to flying because of the patdowns, backscatter X-ray, and soon-to-be unionized TSA, but as it is right now, it is extremely inefficient. Schedules are not conducive to business travel and fares are outrageous. If you want to spend money on a rail project, reform Amtrak.
One final quick hit: I'm working on my next edition of Nick's Lists. I had so much fun doing my last post on road construction (with a little friendly nudge from Josh) that I decided my next list will be a little bit of science, engineering, and road tripping. We're going to take a look at the top 10 best bridges in America! I'm looking forward to posting it later this week. Stay tuned.
