I had been doing pretty good lately about not turning this into a football blog, but this one is definitely worth a quick hit. The Redskins look like they are going to cut Clinton Portis as early as tomorrow, as Matt Mosely at the NFC BEAST blog is reporting. This shouldn't be a surprise for anyone involved, especially Clinton. This would be the 2nd time that Mike Shanahan has put the 30 year old (over the hill for running backs) out to pasture. Remember it was he who traded Clinton for Champ Bailey and a 2nd round pick in 2004.
Clinton will leave the Redskins organization in very good standing with Redskins fans, regardless of where he ends up next (and he will hook on with somebody else for sure). We appreciate that he is the single-season record holder for yards (1,516), as well as taking committed steps to improve himself for the betterment of the team. He never missed an offseason workout, and encouraged wayward teammates to do the same, usually (emphasis on the usually) not complaining in the process. He put on 20 pounds of muscle after the 2004 season to adjust to Joe Gibbs style of counter-trey running. In return, Gibbs modified his playcalling in 2005 to allow for more stretch and cutback running to better accomdate the style Portis excelled at in Denver and the U (Miami, FL).
We also will never forget the crazy cast of characters that livened our Thursday afternoons in 2005. We will never forget Southeast Jerome (and his ghost), Sheriff Gonna-Getcha, Dr. Don't Know, Bro Sweets, Coach Janky Spanky, and of course Johnny White Guy (that would be Mr. Cooley in disguise).
Unfortunately, the coaching merry-go-round did nobody any favors, especially Clinton (and our ever-changing stable of quarterbacks), and as age increased, so did the injuries. Clinton Portis-we salute you.
For shame. Portis was entertaining, to be sure, but I never cared for him, personally.
