Caputo's Corner Riot Watch

Taking a page from the University of Maryland's post-Duke game playbook, Vancouver Canucks fans decided to celebrate losing Stanley Cup Finals game 7 in their own...shall we say...unique way last night.  Boston defeated the Canucks 3-0 to win their first Stanley Cup since 1972, but unfortunately that was not the story of the night.  Burning cars and trash cans, blood, and all around drunkenness englufed the city of Vancouver.  It got so bad that famous British Columbians such as Steve Nash and Henrik Sedin (OK, not from British Columbia, but he plays for the Canucks) tweeted to the fans that Vancouver has in Nash's words "class."

OK, nobody ever said Maryland students had "class" after they destroyed every car, mattress, and bike shop they could find.  Besides, Steve, do you really think that anybody currently taking part in a post-playoff riot is going to stop what their doing because Steve Nash recently tweeted?  Even if they did, do you really think that a tweet saying that Vancouver has a lot of "class" is really going to get them to stop?  If you answered no to these questions, you would be correct.

I'm sorry, but I don't how losing a hockey game would encourage somebody (regardless of how drunk) to start chucking garbage at police decked out in riot gear.  I just don't get it.  I didn't get it when Maryland studnets were doing it, and I don't get it now.  We can make jokes all we want about these riots, but it really is a disturbing trend, and one might even argue that I am in some way glorifying it simply by writing up a short blog post about it.  However, given how my alma mater has a somewhat dubious history with this type of behavior, I feel like it is at least worth noting.  I will stop now.

Stay classy, Vancouver.
