Homeownership Updates

So much for back to my regular blogging pace...but I have a legit excuse!  This past weekend, I was in Durham, NC...in the belly of the beast that is Tobacco Road...helping my sister, officially Dr. Laura Caputo, move into her new apartment.  She starts her residency at Duke in 2 weeks.  My task was to move heavy items and help construct large pieces of disassembled kitchen and bedroom furniture.  If that wasn't enough, look what we found:

That, my blogospheric friends, is a black widow spider.  You can't see the hourglass, but trust me, it's there.  This was just the beginning of the bugs that we found in this place.  I am happy to report that the staff of the apartment complex we were at were very prompt in their response, and they were very nice.  We were a bit disturbed when the dude came to take care of this thing.  He just took a paper towel and squished it in his hand!  Um...either that guy didn't realize that black widows are LETHAL...or that wasn't the first time he did that, nor did he anticipate that would his last.  Yikes...

Anyway, the move itself was fine, the drive on the other hand...was BORING.  Interstate 85 between Petersburg, VA and Durham has to be one of (if not the most) boring roads in the country.  There is literally NOTHING there, except a lot of trees, asphalt, speed traps, and dead air.  Apparently there are outlet malls in Oxford, NC, but that's it, and by then you're close enough to Durham.  The speed limit on this road is 70 in Virginia and 65 in North Carolina.  However, it is so easy to hit 80 on that road for 2 reasons.  One, it is so boring that you want to just get through it.  Two, with a few exceptions in Virginia, it really is a well constructed, straight, road.  Of course, the drawback to that is the increased risk of highway hypnosis.  Especially when you watch tall trees just pass you by and nothing else...not even passing cars...to keep you alert.

A piece of good news on the highways and byways front is that VDOT has raised the speed limit on I-95 between Fredericksburg and Richmond to 70 mph.  Virginia is notorious for being one of the toughest in the country when it comes to speed enforcement (both in terms of ticketing and penalties), but I will give them credit.  The understand (or at least have a very good idea) what it takes to keep society moving.  They have sensible speed limits (albeit strictly enforced) and their construction actually achieves something (unlike Pennsylvania which is essentially the neverending quest to find the next pothole and not fix it).

The title of this post is "Homeownership Updates." What is the update for me, you ask?  I am currently doing the laundry! (cue confetti).  Most of you are probably rolling your eyes, but this is a significant milestone, folks.  I just had my new washer/dryer set delivered last Thursday...and I'm trying it out today.  So far so good.  I will also be running the dishwasher for the first time.  We'll see how that all goes.
