The Denver Broncos today hired John Fox to be their next head coach, replacing Josh McDaniels. McDaniels of course started 6-0 in 2008, only to win a grand total of 6 more games over the next year and a half. VP of football ops John Elway announced the hire, using terms such as "wisdom," "energy," and "perfect fit" to describe the first really major hire of his tenure in the Broncos front office.
Excuse me for a second...
HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Now that I got THAT out of my system, let's take a look at who the Bronco's are really getting. Fox is fresh off of a season in Carolina where he is leaving them quite the late Christmas gift...the number 1 overall selection in the NFL Draft. You don't get that for being good boys and girls, however. You get that for...well...playing like bums. 2-14 folks. Yes, 2-14. I know he took them to the Super Bowl in 2003, but he was barely over .500 in 9 seasons with the Panthers (73-71; 5-3 playoffs). The Broncos did take a chance on an unproven in McDaniels and Fox does provide somewhat of a known commodity, but that's the thing. You know exactly what you're going to get with Fox, the average to above average team that usually finishes around 8-8 or 9-7. You get the occasional good year like the Super Bowl run, and the occasional really lousy year like last year. If the Broncos are OK with that type of consistency, then I guess it is a good hire. They took a chance in 2009 and it backfired, so now they are a bit gunshy. Perry Fewell was available, and he did lead the Giants to a top 10 season in total defense. You have to think he would have been an upgrade over McDaniels, and would have generated positive buzz in Bronco nation. I guess he was just another victim of one of the worst rules in professional sports, but that's another topic for another day.
