The Steelers advance to Super Bowl XLV with a chance to become the first team to win 7 Super Bowl titles. They already have the most at 6. Their 8th appearance ties them with Dallas for the most all time. The two games today had eerie similarities. There was a clearly obviously dominant team. In the first game it was the Packers. In the second game it was the Steelers. However, neither team could perfectly execute their gameplan to put their opponents away. They kept allowing the Bears and Jets respectively to hang around. They allowed their opponents to have just a little bit of momentum, just enough to keep their hopes up and give them incentive to play all 60 minutes.
Nevertheless, at the end of the day, the better teams did win. They were not exactly convincing wins, but the better teams did win. This sets up a Super Bowl pitting two teams of very contrasting styles. Pittsburgh is the grinding, physical team. Green Bay is more of the finesse team, that can (and will ) hit your in the mouth. The game will be won and lost when the Packers have the ball. Will Aaron Rodgers use his superior passing attack to challenge the Steeler secondary to make plays. Or, will they allow the Steelers to dictate the play at the line of scrimmage? Will they allow the Steelers to get pressure with the front 4 allowing the back 7 to be more opportunistic? If nothing else, the Steelers defensively are a bunch of ball hawks. When the Steelers have the ball, can the Pack slow down the rushing attack led by Rashard Mendenhall, and force Ben Roethlisberger to stand in the pocket and throw into Nick Collins' secondary? There are plenty of story lines for this game...and we've got them all covered for you here at Caputo's Corner.
