A seemingly odd subject, granted, but considering how much pizza I ate this weekend, I figured it would be a good post idea to rate the three pizza chains as to their performance. My coronaries are still battling the infusion of cholesterol as we speak.
3rd Place: Dominos Pizza
When eaten: Saturday
What was eaten: Cheese and Pepperoni/Sausage
Analysis: Yes, I worked for Dominos for 5 years, and I've probably eaten more Dominos pizza than any other brand. I'm still good friends with the manager at my old store (what's up Nino!), and I still really like the pies that come out of there. Truth be told, however, ever since they did that reformuation of the crust, I have not been a fan. I like the simple: a good robust crust, melty cheese (is "melty" even really a word?), just the right amount of sauce, and thick toppings. Nowadays, when I eat Domino's crust, I feel like I'm eating their breadsticks. If I want to eat breadsticks...I'll eat breadsticks. The pizza is still good, and compared to other national chains (Pizza Hut and Papa John's), Dominos is still by far the best. Since I can still practically walk to the store from my house, pizza night at the Caputo's will still continue to be Dominos. By the way, I still don't know what "better ingredients" means at Papa Johns, but they just don't cut the pepperoni. Stick to throwing footballs, papa.
2nd Place: Ledo Pizza
When eaten: Friday
What was eaten: Meat Lovers and Veggie Lovers
Analysis: The only night of the weekend when I ate more than just 2 toppings at a time, Ledo's motto continues to be "Ledo pizza is square because Ledo's doesn't cut corners." They do not. Between 5 guys at a table, we nearly killed 2 larges (4 trays) of the stuff. I would have to say that of the 3, Ledo's is the best tasting pizza, but that might have been because of the extra toppings, so let's not get carried away. They always seem to load it up moreso than than any other chain I can think of. However, I do have 2 big criticisms. While the crust is unique, it is a thin crust. Like I described with Dominos, I like a robust crust, a crust you have to chew. Ledos isn't like that, you can finish off a slice in 2 bites. While that does encourage going back for more, I don't feel like eating pizza should be a speed contest. The other criticism is with the sauce. Every time I eat Ledo's I feel like they put way too much sauce on, so much so that I often times find myself with the cheese and toppings in my mouth, but not the rest of the pie. Nevertheless, by far the best tasting of the 3, Ledos will continue to get my business whenever the mood hits me just right.
1st Place: Vocelli's Pizza
When eaten: Sunday
What was eaten: Cheese and Pepperoni
Analysis: A school staple for years, Vocelli's gives us deals at schools all the time. If you ever forget what day of the week it is, all you have to do is smell the caf and the unmistakable aroma of Vocelli's reminds you that it is Wednesday. Vocelli's is what Domino's used to be, and even a little bit better. I especially like the tiny pepperonis, no fighting with a 3 centimeter diameter pepperoni slice. To bite or not to bite... Anyway, simple recipes, just the right amount of cheese and sauce, whole pepperonis in every bite, and that desire for just one more slice. That is what pizza is supposed to be. Bravisimo, Vocelli!
I hope you enjoyed my weekend pizza review. I don't feel like I will want to eat pizza again for about a month.
I have never had Vocelli's, so I cannot speak to its goodness or badness. Maybe someday I will end up eating it. Anyway, I piggybacked on this post and linked to this post as well.
